NPR | July 19, 2014 5:37 p.m.

David Greene talks to actor Kurt Russell about the Portland Mavericks, a 1970s independent baseball team created by Bing Russell, who played Deputy Clem on “Bonanza” and is Kurt’s father. The ragtag team drew much skepticism. It ended up shattering attendance records and signing, Kurt Russell as a player and VP. “Battered Bastards” is a documentary about this team.(Language Advisory: Contains “battered bastards of baseball,” “sex with a manager’s wife” and “pissed as hell.”)
