One of the world’s most trusted sources for news is unavailable. The New York Times‘ main site and mobile app is down and has been since a little after 11 a.m. ET, when users who tried to visit received a “Service Unavailable” message.

At 11:53 a.m. ET, the news organization’s Twitter account sent this message: “The New York Times Web site is experiencing technical difficulties. We expect to be back up shortly.”

This kind of situation is especially frustrating on a busy news day. This outage is happening against a backdrop of unrest in Egypt, so The Times‘ Lede blog has recommended that you follow its correspondents on Twitter for updates on the crackdown there.

So far The Times has not offered an explanation for the outage but we’ll update with more information as we get it.
