A member of Congress from the Northwest will be the fourth highest ranking Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers won the position of chair of the House Republican Conference Wednesday. It happened in a closed meeting of House Republicans.
Martin Kady , Congressional editor for Politico, tells NPR News McMorris Rogers projects a more diverse image for the GOP.
“They like having Cathy McMorris Rogers, who is young. She is 43. She’s from the West Coast and she’s a woman. She’s someone they want at the front of the mic at these press conferences.”
McMorris Rodgers won the leadership position over Congressman Tom Price of Georgia. House members also chose Oregon Congressman Greg Walden to chair the National Republican Congressional Committee. It oversees House GOP campaign efforts.
