OHSU trauma surgeon Dr. Laszlo Kiraly spoke today about the condition of the 15-year-old girl who was wounded in the Clackamas Town Center shooting.

Kristina Shevchenko was rushed to OHSU after being shot with an assault rifle. She went into surgery after suffering a chest injury.  Trauma surgeon Dr. Laszlo Kiraly says her right lung and liver were the two major organs in danger, saying her injuries are life threatening. Kiraly says the surgery went well, but they are keeping a close eye on her.

“When we saw her, fortunately she was awake. However she had a collapsed right lung with blood in her chest, she had some active bleeding from wounds at her right chest. We were able to treat her rapidly; she underwent an operation that was successful; at this point she is still in serious condition.”

Kiraly says Shevchenko remains stable in intensive care. He says doctors are optimistic about her recovery but the teenager is still at risk for complications and infections.
