Oregon Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, a Democrat, has signed on to co-sponsor a bill that would ban the sale or possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices.
The bill was introduced last January by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y. Oregon Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer was an early co-sponsor. But it hit a wall in the House Judiciary Committee about a month after it was introduced.
The bill would grandfather in existing clips but would make it illegal to buy or own new ones. Bonamici said she sees it as consistent with her support for the Second Amendment.
We’re not talking about taking away someone’s hunting rifle,” she said. “This is an opportunity for people who are in the NRA to step up and say we’re going to do something about these tragedies.”
A number of bills pertaining to weapons and ammunition are under discussion. Bonamici says she’s interested in all of them.
She also says Congress needs to work on a mental health policy response to mass shootings.
