Oregon park rangers say a loophole in the leash rule is allowing some dog owners to let their pets run free.

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department spokesman Richard Walkoski says the number is small, but there have been instances when a person is walking through the park with their dog running around and a park ranger will tell them to put their dog on a leash. Then the person puts the leash on the dog and lets the animal run.

The Statesman Journal reported Sunday that rangers are seeking a change to the rule next week when the Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission meets.

They want to add language that specifies a person must maintain control of the animal.
