Oregon chickens may get a housing upgrade. House lawmakers passed a measure Monday aimed at giving egg-laying hens more room to move around. Representative Mike McLane spoke in favor of the measure and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to drop a pun or two.

“I was designed to carry this bill give my position in the pecking order. But I’m not going to crack jokes or scramble issues. This is a straight forward issue. These are Oregon chickens. These are our chickens,” McLane said.

Washington Governor Chris Gregoire has already signed a bill changing the way chickens are housed in her state. Oregon’s bill now awaits signature by Governor John Kitzhaber. Animal rights activists in Oregon and Washington say the changes in both states don’t go far enough. They’re launching ballot initiatives aimed at giving hens even more space.
