Multiple lightning strikes ignited eight new fires Thursday night in Willamette National Forest near Detroit, filling the air with thick smoke that limited visibility.

Fire officials on the Whitewater Fire said they worked to suppress the new starts but couldn’t confirm how many had been put out.

“There will be fires emerging throughout the day from lightning strikes,” Detroit district ranger Grady McMahan said. “Fortunately, we have many resources in the area.”

Thick smoke blanketed Detroit Lake in the morning, with air quality levels falling to “unhealthy.” Visibility was so limited people reported being unable to see across the reservoir.
