Oregon Health Authority Director Pat Allen told a Senate committee Monday to expect more problems to surface as he and his staff go about inspecting the business aspects of the massive agency he was recently picked to lead.

This acknowledgment came during a hearing largely framed by the recent revelation that OHA wrongly paid out about $74 million in federal Medicaid money from 2014 to 2016.

Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward, D-Portland/Beaverton, told Allen she was “dismayed” when she read about the overpayments, but considered the problem analogous to cleaning out a closet — it looks worse before it looks better. She then asked if he expected to find more “challenges.”

“Without a doubt,” he said. “There are things that we’re going to find out about.”
