Locked Drop Boxes Don’t Deter Late Voters’ Determination In Lane County


Some voters will never ­admit defeat.

Lane County elections employees were dispatched to two ballot drop boxes Wednesday ­afternoon to retrieve ballots that voters tried to jam into the locked slots after the 8 p.m. election ­deadline passed on Tuesday.

“We certainly have the boxes locked,” said County Clerk Cheryl Betschart, who supervises the elections office. “I’m not sure why they tried to stuff them in there.”

Residents called the clerk’s office to alert them to the ­ballots sticking out of the drop boxes in front of the Erb Memorial Union on the ­University of ­Oregon campus and at ­Amazon Pool.
