Members of Oregon’s business and faith communities met in Portland Friday to discuss poverty in the state.
Gov. John Kitzhaber and First Lady Cylvia Hayes led the meeting as part of the Oregon Prosperity Initiative. This is a plan that includes reducing poverty levels in Oregon to below 10-percent – and raising income levels above the national average — by 2020.
Hayes says all Oregonians have a vested interest in reducing poverty.
“The crisis of poverty is affecting every single Oregonian, even if you’re fortunate enough to be at a higher income levels,” Hayes said.
Hayes says poverty is an overall economic drain and a human tragedy.
