The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will accept applications for state designation of scenic bikeways by email until March 15. Scenic bikeways are the best road bicycle rides in all of Oregon and are on existing roads and paths.
Applicants are also responsible for writing and implementing a bikeway plan if the route is accepted into the program. Local involvement in the process is critical to the success of the bikeway. Any person or organization interested in applying is encouraged to contact bicycle recreation coordinator Alex Phillips at 503-986-0631 or email@example.com before making an application.
An application consists of a proposed route and letters of support from all road jurisdictions which the route uses and other items. The handbook and application are posted at www.oregonscenicbikeways.org
Applications will be rated on scenic values from a cyclist’s perspective by the Oregon Scenic Bikeway Committee, which will recommend bikeway designations to the OPRD director. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission must give final approvals.
The scenic bikeway program is a partnership among Cycle Oregon, Travel Oregon, the Oregon Department of Transportation and OPRD. The Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway was developed in 2005 by the partnership. Applications for additional bikeways have been taken twice, with approximately half of those proposed being designated. There are nine designated bikeways.
