Oregon Zoo officials say with support from the Oregon Zoo Foundation, they've paid $400,000 to retain legal ownership of Rose-Tu's new calf, Lily.
A California-based company called "Have Trunk Will Travel" had rights to the animal and to another Oregon Zoo elephant, Tusko.
The contract was the subject of media reports which the zoo called "sensationalized" in a press release Friday.
"This controversy was much ado about nothing," Zoo Director Kim Smith said in a news release. But Smith said the support from the foundation was "gratifying."
