The Pamplin Media Group has announced it’s launching a newspaper in Hillsboro. In a matter of weeks, the Hillsboro Tribune will become the city’s second regular paper. Hillsboro readers already have the Argus – which comes out every Tuesday and Friday.

The Pamplin Group is adding the Hillsboro Tribune to more than fifteen papers, including the Beaverton Valley Times, the Clackamas Review, and the Portland Tribune.

John Schrag is the publisher of the Forest Grove News-Times. He’ll soon publish the nearby Hillsboro paper, too.

Schrag says small-town weeklies are bucking the tough climate for newspapers. He says that’s partly because they haven’t suffered from online competition the way big-city dailies, like The Oregonian, have.

“There’s a perception among their readers that ‘oh, I can get that anywhere.’ I think that perception is wrong, but it’s a perception that they’re really battling,” says Schrag. “No one walks into our office in Forest Grove and says ‘I don’t need to subscribe to your paper, because I can get your stories anywhere.’ They know that they can’t.”

The paper is slated to publish its first edition on September 7th. It’ll come out every other week to start, in hopes of becoming a weekly.
