A new coalition in Portland has begun rounding up emergency relief for the typhoon-stricken Philippines.

PDX Relief

PDX Relief is the name of the new task force. It’s made up of local business leaders, elected officials and non-profit organizations.

They’ve joined together to coordinate local relief efforts for victims of the super typhoon that struck the Philippines two weeks ago.

Elizabeth Swager is with the Oregon Fair Trade Campaign. She says immediate relief on the ground is important – but equally important is a long-term strategy on climate change.

“If we don’t address the policy part of it then we aren’t going to be able to keep up with the demand of these crises that keep happening over and over again,” Swager says.

Members of PDX Relief have announced a dozen fundraising events over the next month.

The Portland Trail Blazers plan to chip in. A portion of ticket sales for the team’s game against the Houston Rockets on December 12 will benefit typhoon victims.
