PeaceHealth Laboratories' Workers Anxiously Await To Hear Who Will Be Laid Off

After years of rock-solid, steady work, the ground is shifting for scores of blood-draw experts, couriers, billing specialists and other local PeaceHealth Laboratories employees who will be laid off by early May.

Many of the employees who are set to receive pink slips have skills that are prized in the growing health care field, but they’re bracing for the reality that they may have to pull up roots to find new jobs.

“It’s the only job in town for this profession other than a few scattered industry jobs and McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center (in Springfield),” said a longtime lab employee, who asked not to be identified for fear of jeopardizing future work or potential severance payments. “So we have this gigantic pool of … people with nowhere to go unless they sell their houses and move.”

Most people would prefer not to move, the worker said.
