What do a cowboy, a football coach and a brothel madam have in common? They will all have statues in downtown Pendleton.
The East Oregonian newspaper reports a bronze statue of Pendleton Round-Up cowboy George Fletcher was unveiled last week, and it will later be joined by statues of brothel madam Stella Darby and former Pendleton High football coach Don Requa.
The Darby statue was sponsored by Pendleton Underground Tours. Executive director Brooke Mckay says the statue honors a successful businesswoman while acknowledging the city’s rugged past, which included as many as 14 bordellos.
The Pendleton Arts Council hopes to add at least one more statue next summer. The council is considering either a bronze of former rancher and Round-Up queen Kathleen McClintock or a trio of statues depicting cowgirls Kittie Kanutt, Prairie Rose and Ruth Roach.
