Authorities say an armed man arrested near an Oregon school where a student was killed told officers he was there to protect his sister.

Authorities said Wednesday that 21-year-old Joseff Powell was spotted going around a checkpoint on Tuesday as students at Reynolds High School in Troutdale were being searched.

Powell is not suspected of being involved in the campus attack.

An affidavit filed by Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Adam Gibbs says an officer stopped Powell and discovered a loaded handgun sticking out of his waistband.

Gibbs says Powell told a police detective that he had he heard about the shooting and wanted to protect his younger sister.

Powell was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. He could not be reached for comment.
