The Portland Police Bureau announced this morning that officers will have a more visible presence around metro-area malls and other shopping areas. Police spokesman Sergeant Pete Simpson told OPB's Think Out Loud Wednesday that the idea is to reassure people after the fatal shooting at Clackamas Town Center.
"After what happened yesterday, certainly it's shaken a lot of people's sense of safety," Simpson said. "And we want to assure our communities that the police are there, and we're ready to respond if there are any problems."
Simpson said officers will be more visible for the next couple of weeks, through the holiday shopping season. He said many malls have traditionally hired uniformed officers to watch over their sites. He said the additional police presence means that precinct officers who are not out on other calls will make themselves apparent, patrolling well-trafficked shopping districts.
