Portland Parks and Recreation received a national award for excellence Tuesday.

The National Gold Medal Award is the highest honor given by the Academy for Park and Recreation Administration and the National Recreation and Park Association. Nick Fish is Portland's Parks' Commissioner.

The hard work is done by our dedicated employees and our partners in the field and everyone who supports us. And I just couldn't be prouder of this award or more grateful for all the people that have supported our work over the years," Fish said.

The awards are divided into five categories based on population size. Portland competed in the Class 1 category that includes places with populations of 250,000 or more.

It’s the largest category and Fish says it's particularly competitive. The other Class 1 finalists were local governments in North Carolina, Florida and Missouri.
