The Portland Police Bureau has fired Officer Dane Reister for unsatisfactory performance and misuse of a weapon.
Reister mistakenly fired lethal rounds at William Monroe from a beanbag shotgun in June 2011. Monroe was permanently disabled by the injury.
Portland Police Chief Mike Reese said the investigation was long and thorough, and he cited complexities due to pending criminal charges.
He hoped Reister’s termination would bring some sense of closure.
The city of Portland will pay $2.3 million to settle a federal lawsuit filed by Monroe.
Police union spokesman Daryl Turner said he could not comment on the termination.
