Portland police are conducting extra patrols around movie theaters, following the shooting of 71 people at a theatre showing the latest Batman movie in Colorado.

Sergeant Pete Simpson says they want residents to feel safe going out to see a movie:

"Officers will be providing extra patrol around movie theaters and will be out and about in the community. The Portland Police Bureau asking that anyone in the public seeing something suspicious around Portland movie theaters to call 911."

Simpson says there is no information to suggest a similar incident might occur in the area. In a statement, Police Chief Mike Reese indicated that other cities around the country are providing extra officers around theaters.
