Portland State University Union Gives Strike Notice

OPB | April 3, 2014 6:42 a.m. | Updated: April 3, 2014 2:40 p.m.

Leaders of the faculty union at Portland State University have submitted an official strike notice. There’s a bargaining session scheduled for Friday.

The notice means professors could be on picket lines starting April 16.

The American Association of University Professors at PSU has been in talks with administrators for months. The faculty union voted last month to authorize a strike, and leaders produced this video in support of the strike notice.

In the video, professors and students speak out: “For the last year, faculty and academic professionals have used every tool to negotiate a fair and student-centered contract.”

The video closes with the words in black and white: “Portland State Set to Strike: April 16, 2014.”

Administrators issued a statement that they hope to make progress in the upcoming bargaining session.

The two sides disagree on compensation, the availability of multi-year contracts, and the faculty union’s role in crafting policy.
