Portland Streetcar says it is within days of issuing tickets to fare-evaders.

Riders who hop the train without paying will soon be liable for $175, if they’re caught.

Spokeswoman Julie Gustafson says that until now, streetcar employees didn’t have the certifications to issue citations.

She says the officer who’s been onboard trains issuing warnings for the past year is now ready to enforce the law.

“There are a few people who he now knows, who see him and dodge him, and he’s looking to be able to issue the citation to people who are blatantly abusing the system,” Gustafson says.

Gustafson says that citations are meant more as a deterrent than a source of revenue: despite public perception, just five percent of riders board the streetcar without paying.
