Christine Sinclair, a forward for the Portland Thorns, scored her 159th career goal playing for the Canadian national team Sunday.
The Associated Press reported Sinclair scored in the second half of Canada’s 6-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the group stage of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament.
Sinclair passed American Mia Hamm on the all-time scoring list and is now second to Abby Wambach. Hamm retired with 158 career goals, while Wambach did so with 184.
“It’s a huge honor,” Sinclair said. “It’s something that I didn’t think would ever happen when I started with the national team. It’s pretty cool.”
Hamm and Wambach took to Twitter to congratulate Sinclair after her goal.
Congrats to @sincy12 on goal 159. You are a true professional and one of the greatest finishers our game has ever seen. Another level .— Mia Hamm (@MiaHamm) February 15, 2016
Sinclair came to the Thorns in 2013, but was no new Portlander at the time. She led the University of Portland to two NCAA titles in 2002 and 2005.
