The Portland Timbers won in their first postseason match Thursday night, defeating Sporting Kansas City.

In an extraordinary finish, the game was eventually decided by a shootout that went 11 rounds — all the way to the goalkeepers.

After the first 90 minutes of play the score was tied 1-1.

Kansas City scored in the first six minutes of a 30-minute overtime and took the lead 2-1. But with just two minutes left, the Timbers' Maximiliano Urruti stuffed a pass from teammate Dairon Asprilla deep into Kansas City's net.

A nail-biting shootout followed that was tied after 10 rounds.

In the 11th and final round of the shootout, it was the goalkeepers turn.

The Timber's Adam Kwarasey kicked and scored on Kansas City goal keeper John Kempin. Then Kwarasey returned to the net and blocked Kempin's shot. The crowd erupted.

The Timbers advance in the Major League Soccer playoffs. Their next game is against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday in Portland.
