Thousands of Washington County residents lost electricity this afternoon after a power surge.

The fire department received a report about a blown electrical meter. Other people called the emergency dispatch about similar incidents and power outages stretching from Sherwood to King City.

Cassandra Ulven is the Public Information Officer at the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue.

She says the weather was a factor.

Very blustery. It’s rainy, and it’s windy. And I know that there are a lot of folks, obviously, without power and it’s starting to get a bit colder.”

Portland General Electric suspects a fallen tree limb triggered a power surge. They’re hoping for a prompt fix.

Sherwood High School canceled all afternoon and evening events at the school.
