The deal to avoid teacher layoffs in Portland Public Schools took a step forward Thursday night. Members of the Portland Association of Teachers voted to make more than $2.6 million in concessions.
More than two million would come from teachers delaying an experienced-based raise for half a year. The rest of PAT’s contribution is from reducing a legal judgment the district owes the union.
Thursday night’s vote is the first of three approvals the deal needs.
The Portland School Board plans to approve the district’s contribution of $2.6 million, Monday night. But PPS can’t integrate the rescue package into its official budget for next school year, until the city budget passes.
The Portland City Council is scheduled to vote late this month on the city’s $5 million contribution.
