The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers for the third phase of a sweeping national research study about cancer.

The organization is looking to enroll 500 more people from the Portland area by the end of this week. The first phase of the study started in 1952, and linked smoking to cancer.

Now in its third phase, the study aims to nail down cancer risks over a lifetime.

The group is looking for participants between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never had cancer.  The first step is to sign up in person, have your waist measured, and give a blood sample.

Alpa Patel, an epidemiologist with the American Cancer Society, tells OPB's Beth Hyams that the second part is an at-home survey estimated to take about 45 minutes.
