Whether we’re talking about a rural bus service, or a spidery network of transit options for a major city, the challenge is essentially the same: How do you maintain the usefulness of a mass transit system while government subsidies dwindle, and the cost of everything else – like fuel and labor – goes up?

Jarrett Walker has thought a lot about the future of transit. He’s a consultant on transit planning and policy. He’s worked with a number of cities on their transit networks, including Portland.

Jarrett Walker joined OPB Morning Edition host Geoff Norcross to discuss the future of mass transit. Click “play” above to listen in.
