The body of a climber who fell on Mount Hood this morning has been located.

Search and rescue teams were dispatched to Mt. Hood after receiving a report that someone had fallen in the area of Eliot Glacier.

A National Guard Blackhawk helicopter team confirmed where the climber fell, and that conditions were too dangerous to retrieve the body.

The Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said earlier that an eyewitness reported seeing the climber fall an estimated 1,000 feet.

Officials say the identity of the missing climber is still unknown.

The climber appeared to be alone when he fell at about 8 a.m. Tuesday. Other climbers lost sight of the person — who appeared to be a man — after the fall near Eliot Glacier, according to Hood River officials.

Temperatures at the mountain’s summit on Tuesday reached 47 degrees and 56 degrees at its base.

The AP contributed to this report.
