The Reynolds School District has canceled Monday classes because its teachers could be on strike by then.

Reynolds serves East Portland, Gresham, Fairview, and surrounding areas. The teachers' most recent contract expired in July. Union President Joyce Rosenau said they will be negotiating this weekend.

"The only time we're going to meet prior to the possible strike date is Sunday at 1 p.m.," Rosenau said. "And that's because that's state-mandated. The mediator says we must meet that day."

The two sides have been meeting since last spring. Rosenau characterized the union's chief concerns as prep time during school day, the district's practice of accepting unsigned complaints against teachers and continuance clauses. Those allow the district to extend the terms of its contract after the time when it would normally end.

The district declined to comment on the talks. Some school functions, like summer meal programs and commencement, will still be offered if the strike goes forward.

The last day of school is scheduled for June 13.
