The discovery of a rifle in a high school classroom Wednesday morning triggered a lockdown at four Vancouver schools. School officials say a teacher at Evergreen High found a case containing a disassembled rifle in a classroom.

Evergreen and the nearby Cascade Middle School, Legacy High School, and Burton Elementary School and an early childhood center were all locked down following the discovery of the rifle.

Evergreen district spokeswoman Carol Fenstermacher said the discovery was nerve-wracking, but students and staff did what they should.

“They reacted fairly well – once they knew the information,” she said. “It’s that period when we’re trying to gather information, so we don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with, you know, and it makes people really nervous.”

Fenstermacher said the police have apprehended the student believed to be responsible. He faces an emergency expulsion from school.

By late morning the district was in the process of returning schools to normal operations. It was an early release day anyway for Evergreen High, and those students were being allowed to go home.
