A sixth-grade Portland math teacher received a $25,000 Milken Educator Award Tuesday. Teresa Chan Seidel teaches at Robert Gray Middle School.
Rob Saxton with the state education department and Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith were there when Seidel was surprised with the award at a school assembly.
Seidel said it’s an honor and that she’s committed to serving each and every student.
“I love teaching math. People are surprised to find that my degree is actually in biology, but when I started student-teaching a long time ago. I got placed with a master teacher in Eugene, and he taught math and from then on out I just loved it,” she said.
Seidel is the daughter of Asian immigrants. She received all her formal schooling in Oregon.
The Milken Family Foundation recognizes and presents cash awards to teachers nationwide. Each year, participating states recommend candidates to the foundation.
This is the twenty-sixth year of the Milken awards.
