Roseburg Drops Challenge Against School Mascot Ban

AP | Jan. 24, 2013 1:46 p.m.

The Roseburg School Board has suspended its legal challenge to the state ban on Native American mascots.

The Oregon Board of Education approved the ban last year. It requires Oregon teams such as the Roseburg Indians, North Douglas Warriors and Reedsport Braves to come up with a new mascot by July 2017, or risk losing state funding.

Board Chairman Steve Patterson told the News-Review that the district learned it would be unlikely to win in a court case.
