Sen. Merkley Calls Senate Deal A 'Significant Win'

OPB | July 16, 2013 3:07 p.m. | Portland

Senator Jeff Merkley says an agreement in the Senate to move forward on executive-branch nominations is a “significant win.”

The Oregon Democrat spoke Tuesday on OPB’s Think Out Loud after the vote.

Republicans in the Senate agreed to allow President Obama’s political nominations to move forward as a way to preserve the filibuster.

The deal came after a meeting Monday.  Most members of the Senate — from both parties — were cloistered without cameras. Merkley said that meeting made a difference.

“It was very thoughtful conversation that helped each group understand the frustrations of the other,” Merkley said,

The deal allows seven nominations to move forward, including the nomination of the first director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
