At a time when many airlines are cutting flights, Allegiant Air is adding service to Eugene. KLCC’S Rachael McDonald reports.

Allegiant is an “a la carte” airline that charges extra for assigned seats, beverages and food. It currently offers service to Las Vegas and will add flights to Phoenix starting in October.

Allegiant spokeswoman Tyra Squyres says the philosophy of the airline is to focus on smaller cities and it’s been successful.

Tyra Squyres: “We just finished July with a 95 percent load factor which means it was 95 percent full basically. It’s kind of unheard of in the industry especially in today’s economy it’s really something to talk about.”

The Eugene airport recently lost U.S. Airways service to Phoenix and Las Vegas. Delta has also cut service.

Squyres says Allegiant will also add service at Medford and may include other Oregon airports soon.
