Snow, Freezing Temps Stress The Homeless

This week's below-freezing Oregon temperatures are especially hard on people living without homes.

Some churches are serving as emergency shelters this week to bring people in from the cold and snow. Many homeless shelters also open up extra areas, like dining halls and lounges, where people can sleep during these critical weather conditions.

Chris Clouart is the managing director of Bend's Bethlehem Inn. He said the cold temperatures are hard for people living outside. But it can get even worse when things start to thaw.

"When the snow falls and it is cold you can actually stay dry during those periods cause nothing is melting," said Clouart. "But then in a week's time if the temperature goes up and the snow is still on the ground and people get wet, then sometimes 40 degrees can be more dangerous than 25 degrees."

Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing through the end of the week.
