40 Klamath Falls Area Seniors Await 'Meals On Wheels'

About 40 senior citizens in the Klamath Falls area are on a waiting list for the Meals on Wheels program there. Program officials say that’s because of cuts in federal funding.

Meals on Wheels provides thousands of meals for senior citizens statewide. The Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center needs about twenty-nine thousand dollars to provide meals for the wait-listed seniors. That’ll only provide for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Marc Kane is the Executive Director at Klamath Basin Senior Citizens Center. He says that because of federal funding cuts, seniors have been on a waiting list since September.

People are potentially not getting the nutritional needs met and that’s not good for their health in the long term,” says Kane. “We’ll see more drastic results from that.

In Portland, there is no waiting list nor do officials anticipate one.

But other Meals on Wheels programs in the state say they are also struggling with funding.
