An elementary school has been closed in Southern Oregon after about half the 300 students and more than a dozen staff members fell sick with an unknown illness.

Roseburg School District Superintendent Larry Parsons said Thursday that officials don't know the cause of the ailment, but it does not appear to be related to anything anyone ate in the cafeteria.

He says Fir Grove Elementary School will remain closed until Tuesday so the building can be sterilized. Students were already scheduled to have Monday off for Veterans Day.

The News-Review newspaper reports the school was closed around noon Thursday, and Douglas County health officials were called in to investigate.
