The St. Paul Rodeo says there will be no wild horse race at this year's Fourth of July rodeo.
Publicist Ruth Nicolaus told the Statesman Journal the board voted to cancel the event this year, but it could be held in years to come.
Last year two horses died from injuries in a head-on collision. In the event, wild horses run around the arena and participants compete to be the first to saddle and ride one.
Other events such as bull riding and steer wrestling will continue. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association designates St. Paul as one of eight rodeos on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, which means it attracts top competitors.
