The Secretary of State’s office says it has alerted the FBI that the attack appears to have been launched from overseas.

But spokesman Tony Green said it’s not clear at this point whether it was launched by a government or just a group operating within a foreign country.

“We have no indication at this point who is responsible for this,” he said. “I think it’s important to understand that what we’re doing is identifying how they got in, shoring up the weakness that allowed them to get in. And then restoring our applications so they’re available to the public.”

Green said the agency doesn’t store full credit card information, so that was not available to the cyber criminals.

The part of the Secretary of State’s website that does work says the attack appears to have been caught early and was stopped before any serious damage occurred.
