Clackamas County Sheriff's staff have launched a multi-state alert for the suspect linked to Monday's stabbing death of retired engineer Fritz Hayes jn Lake Oswego.
Sgt. Adam Phillips says 37-year-old Erik John Meiser has a 23-year arrest record across eight states. Phillips says Meiser is someone who travels a lot without much money or a car, so police are keeping their eye on non-traditional transportation, like railroad freight cars.
"That is one of the possibilities. We have information with all the different railroad police organizations, the TSA, DHS, to intelligence centers around the United States," Phillips says. "One way I think we'll further our efforts is through social networking."
Phillips says the department is urging people to post Meiser's picture through Facebook and other networks, so that people in other states might see it. Meiser is described as distinctive, with the word "Nazi" tattooed on his left hand. Police have received over 350 tips so far. Phillips urges people to call promptly if they think they've seen Meiser.
Fritz Hayes' friends and family plan to gather Monday night for a vigil to remember him.
