The Portland Thorns named Paul Riley as the club’s new head coach. Riley’s coaching debut is scheduled for the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season.
Riley’s arrival comes after former Thorns head coach Cindy Parlow Cone resigned due to family reasons. In the Thorns first season last year Parlow Cone led the team to a championship.
Previously, Riley served as head coach of the Philadelphia Independence in Women’s Professional Soccer. During his time there, the team reached the league’s championship match in back-to-back seasons.
Riley is a two-time Women’s Professional Soccer Coach of the Year. He says the Thorns have tremendous players on staff.
“It’s a privilege to be the new head coach of the Portland Thorns, to go into a soccer mad city and a championship caliber team is a great opportunity for us. And looking forward to give the Portland fans something to cheer about and bringing another championship back,” Riley said.
Riley began his women’s coaching career in 2005 as the head coach of the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League.
Riley is a native of Liverpool, England and studied English and journalism in college.
