Major League Soccer has named the head coach of the Portland Timbers, Caleb Porter, the league’s Coach of the Year.
Porter turned the Timbers from one of the league’s worst a year ago to the having best record in the western conference this season. It was his first season as an MLS head coach.
Timbers’ officials say Porter is traveling and not available for comment.
After the Timbers were eliminated from the playoffs last month, Porter reflected on his team’s performance this season — even against the more experienced Salt Lake team that defeated them.
Porter told reporters, “We didn’t look out of place, and I think that’s remarkable, for our team, really ten months into this, to be in the position that we’re in. In saying that, there are some things we’ll learn from the series, for sure. And when we’re back - and we will be back - we’ll do better.”
Team owner Merritt Paulson hired Caleb Porter last year. Porter had previously coached college soccer for the University of Akron.
