The Umatilla Police Department and Desert River Inn raised almost $1,000 for Special Olympics through their fifth annual Tip-a-Cop this weekend.

Officers and reserve officers from the Umatilla department helped seat guests and wait tables Friday and Saturday nights at the hotel restaurant. All tips — both for officers and Desert River Inn staff — went toward the fundraiser.

“It’s a lot of fun, the guests have fun, the officers have fun, the wait staff has fun,” Angella Lambert, Desert River Inn owner and operator, said Saturday. “We have had people who didn’t even know we were doing it and immediately donated.”

One guest gave $100 on a $12 bill.

Over the weekend, restaurant guests tipped about $900 for the fundraiser. Umatilla Police Chief Darla Huxel said the department will add a donation from the Umatilla Police Officers Association, as well as private donors, to the total before sending it to the organization.

Huxel said the department always tries to donate at least $1,500 for Special Olympics each year.
