University Bookstore Puts Competition Online

The nonprofit bookstore at Oregon State University wants to fight the notion that university bookstores are more expensive than online retailers and is willing to prove it.

The Oregon State University Beaver Store has launched a price-comparison feature on its website, the Corvallis Gazette-Times reports. It includes comparisons for new, used and rental textbooks.

CEO Steve Eckrich says students will usually find that its textbooks are the same price or cheaper than online retailers.

The store also developed a free application for smartphones that quotes the store’s buy-back price after the bar code is scanned.

The nonprofit book store also puts its profits toward a 10 percent discount for students.
