A group of Washington farmers is gaining numbers to oppose the proposed labeling of genetically modified foods.

According to the Capital Press, fruit growers in Central Washington joined more than 30 state agricultural groups opposing a November ballot initiative that would require the labeling.

In a press release this week, four tree fruit organizations said the initiative opens the door for mislabeling and doesn’t make it clear how farmers would be held accountable.

Measure advocates say the onus should be on farmers to inform consumers of genetic modifications in the foods they sell.
