Washington school districts are doing a lot better than Oregon in the latest federal competition for education money. Federal officials on Monday announced 61 finalists from across the country.
One of seven Oregon applicants made the round of finalists: the McMinnville School District. Three Washington applications are finalists – out of just five submissions.
The Washington finalists are all group applications. The Vancouver School District led a team of seven districts from seven different states. The bid from the North Central Education Service District was one of the biggest in the nation – with 42 different school systems in Washington, New Mexico, and Arkansas. The Puget Sound Education Service District application includes eight districts, all in Washington.
The U.S. Department of Education plans to choose up to 25 winners before the end of the year. The winners are eligible for up to $40 million.
