Southwest Washington Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler has been picked to serve on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, starting next term.

Herrera Beutler notes that the Appropriations Committee will have to work within whatever parameters negotiators come up with during talks aimed at avoiding the fiscal cliff.

She says she sees the current debate climate as a chance to fund priorities and trim spending.

Herrera Beutler is one of many Republican representatives who signed a no-tax pledge with Americans for Tax Reform. Still, Herrera Beutler says she’s guided not by the standards of independent groups, but by what voters want.

“I made a commitment to them that I’m not going to treat them like a piggybank and I’m not going to raise their taxes to bail out government spending. Our bosses do not reside within the beltway.”

Herrera Beutler will be the only Northwest representative on the committee.

She says she’s glad to have the chance to step in. Although she acknowledges some colleagues have warned to be careful what she wishes for.
